What We Do
The creation of a statewide STAH certification program tailored to the unique needs of the Hawaiian Islands started with the development of E Malama, The Ecotourism Manual for Hawaii written by Barbara Mills, funded in 1999 by Employers Training Fund, Department of Labor & Industrial Relations, Workforce Division, published by STAH.
Pono Travelers evaluate tours for authenticity, quality of program and information, safety, & enjoyableness. Pono Travelers are STAH members that participate in the recertification process of Certified Sustainable Tour Operators. Pono Travelers conduct evaluations of tour operators and provide constructive feedback from the perspective of a sustainably-minded traveler.
Applicants will complete and submit to STAH yearly, a self-assessment checklist which evaluates their operations addressing the minimum requirements as well as the operating principles.Submissions will include membership & a certification fee based on organization size and supporting documentation (i.e., photos, reports, etc.) for review.
